How to Register a Drone with the FAA

Registering takes about five minutes and costs $5. Here is who has to do it, how, and what to put on your drone.

The short answer

Register through FAADroneZone for $5, valid three years. Recreational drones 0.55 lb (250 g) or more must register. Drones flown under Part 107 must register regardless of weight.

Registration is one of the easiest FAA requirements to meet, and one of the most commonly missed. Here is how it works.

Who needs to register?

  • Recreational flyers: any drone that weighs 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or more.
  • Part 107 commercial pilots: every aircraft you fly under Part 107, regardless of weight.

How to register

  • Go to the FAA's FAADroneZone website and create an account.
  • Choose the registration type that matches your flying (recreational or Part 107).
  • Enter your information and aircraft details, and pay the $5 fee.
  • Receive your registration number.

Label your drone

The registration number must be on an exterior surface of the aircraft, where it can be seen without tools. A label, permanent marker, or engraving all work as long as it stays legible.

How long does registration last?

Three years. After that you renew through the same system. Recreational pilots can use one registration number for multiple drones, while Part 107 operators register each aircraft individually.

Do you also need Remote ID?

Registered drones generally must meet the FAA's Remote ID requirements, meaning the aircraft broadcasts identification and location. Check the FAA's current Remote ID guidance and your drone manufacturer's compliance information.

Registration vs. the pilot test

Registration covers the aircraft. The pilot side is different: recreational flyers take the free TRUST test, and commercial pilots need the Part 107 certificate. See Part 107 vs. TRUST or whether you need a license to fly a drone.
